Fall comes quick where I live. One day bright and balmy, the next blustery and cold. The change of seasons is an urgent reminder that nothing stays the same… that change is relentless.
If what is written in the newspapers and on television is the real truth, you would think that the road to success is a smooth one. You get your idea, set your goal, and next thing you know you’ve reached it - not having to change anything else in your life, not even breaking a sweat. Maybe even with a funky soundtrack. Yeah - right.
Sayeth the ancient wisdom: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” In my coaching I come across so many people who want different results in their business, financial situation, relationships and health - and yet who are so resistant to change the actions they take, the beliefs that they hold, or the words they say to themselves.
We so desperately seek “balance” and “flow” in life. But take a close look at an object in “balance”: it is still, static, subject to being disrupted by a slight puff of wind or vibration of earth…
Consider a fast flowing river - it is full of rapids, eddies, rocks and side channels. Why is it that we seek something static like balance, peace and calm, when everything around us is in constant, chaotic, relentless motion?
You can’t steer a parked car. You can’t make a change in the results that you get in your life, unless you are in motion. I would say…no change can happen unless you are in *any kind* of motion. To get results, don’t just stand there - do something!
However… Good old Newton was quite right when he said “to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. Inertia is not only a principle of physics, it is a principle of life. Change requires so much effort and carries so much risk that most people abandon hope of ever creating new results in their life - often before they even start. They accept the belief that “life sucks - then you die.”
You want health? Then expect to ache, pain, sweat, be exhausted, frustrated, not have time, juggle conflicting demands, be frustrated because your muscles, bones, nervous system, heart are not used to the new demands you are making of it…
You want wealth? Then expect to have to get past the terror of talking to strangers, speaking in public, plastering your name and contact info across the city, phone book and Internet, asking and being refused and rebuffed, suffering the interminable “no”s to get to that one golden “yes”…
You want happiness? Then expect to question everything you assumed to be “given” in your life, go on an endless search of who you are, what is your mission and your calling, coming up against the frustrating reality that nothing is real and it is all just perception and interpretation…
At first look, the discomfort, risk and effort required to get results seems to build to become unsurmountable inertia. But does it have to be so?
The only way I have found to get over this inertia is to have a goal.
Not just a simple goal, not just something that seems “reasonable”, “logical” or “realistic” - it has to be a GOAL with a big “G”.
And providing the energy, the passion to drive you through the inertia standing between you and your goal… is your WHY - your motivation and reasons for making this change.
A compelling GOAL combined with a passionate WHY creates what author James Collins (”Built To Last”) calls the “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” - your BHAG. Is the change you are striving for compelling enough to see you through the huge inertia standing between who you are now and who you will be? Is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal something that grabs your attention, moves you to action, sustains you through the discomfort and pain of the transition?
Most people embark on change because something in their life is so uncomfortable that the status-quo is no longer acceptable - that the price of staying put is just too high to bear any more. This approach to change can work, however the inertia that needs to be overcome is so great, that often the frustration of overcoming it causes people to abandon their quest, even when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel (and no, it is not an oncoming train!
Successful, discontinuous, sudden change is almost impossible to create. Think of the unemployed person who suddenly becomes a lottery millionaire: within months the money is spent, because the reality of affluence is so far beyond their “zone of everyday experience”.
Yet it is possible to go from pauper to prosperous, or from fat to fit… and fulfill whatever is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal. The key is to break down the goal into tangible, measurable and specific monthly milestones and daily heartbeats. Making a small 1% change each day, keeping the end BHAG - the goal and the why - in mind at each step, that is a prescription for success.
Focus on what needs to be done right now to create the results you really want. Get into the habit of continuous, incremental, unstoppable change.
There will be days where things don’t work out quite right. Progress is a succession of stops and starts, failures and successes. And, when starting out, failures are more common than successes. Remember that there is more to learn from failure than from success. Even when you are blessed with success, don’t keep doing the same thing.
Find the courage to pause, take a deep breath and reinvent who you are. As you integrate the lessons you learn each day and change your actions bit by bit, you will get closer and closer to the real results that you want.
Just like the relentless change of seasons, nothing is static in this world. So why would the experience of life be any different? It is my belief that true success comes once I am willing to actively reinvent myself each and every day. It is in the flow of reinvention that I start to move with the transformative power of Nature…and in so doing, I let success become a natural habit instead of something to fight against. This is the hard work - and real meaning - of flow.
This morning, when you wake up, be willing to take a deep cleansing breath, face the day and turn the page. Yesterday is the past, history, intangible, eventually fading away. Today does not have to be like any other - you have the power to make it whatever you want it to be. Just choose a star to guide you, and launch yourself towards it.
